When it comes to barbecue, it’s either undeniably and gloriously the real thing, or it’s not. Smokesmith Bar-B-Que is operated by Sean and Katie Smith, a husband-and-wife team that honor the age-old tradition of slow-smoking meats to create a mouthwatering symphony of flavor. They specialize in brisket, pulled pork, and ribs, while also perfecting their sides. Coleslaw, mac & cheese, and beans, are all made from scratch, along with their signature bbq sauces.

Growing up in Upstate New York, Sean frequented the local barbecue joints, such as Syracuse’s Dinosaur Barbecue. Life, and the hunger for mountains, brought him to Montana, where he continued to lust over real, authentic barbecue. In Montana, he also found the love of his life, Katie. In 2016, Sean moved to Sandpoint for a job and Katie joined him the following year. To escape their day jobs, Sean and Katie took up barbecuing as a backyard hobby.

Friends and neighbors began to smell the smoke, whether from the smoker, or from the meat brought to work, and started to show up at their place whenever the smoker was fired up. Developing a passion for smoking meat, they would throw parties for any occasion, always firing up the smoker. Friends would bring empty containers and leave with them full of meats to share with their friends and family.

As Sean gained more experience smoking meats, he hungered to learn more. Reaching out to local BBQ restaurants for advice, while devouring books and videos from pitmasters such as Rodney Scott and Aaron Franklin, he was able to hone his techniques. BBQ became a calling for Sean and Katie, even before it was a career. Friends and family clamoring for even more barbecue led Sean and Katie to turn what used to be a hobby into a career. In 2020, Sean left his corporate job to create Smokesmith.

Smokesmith officially opened for business in the summer of 2020, operating out of the 21 foot white box truck that they built into a food truck. The food truck is lovingly dubbed “Eddie”, as in cousin Eddie from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. They quickly became a staple in the food truck and catering scene in Idaho’s panhandle region, with a cult following for their signature Smokesmith Sundae, Burnt Ends, and the occasional whole hog barbecue.

Sean and Katie are passionate about making simple, satisfying food, without overcomplicating the process. You can find them doing things the old-fashioned way, bartering smoked meats for local hardwood and fruitwood to fuel the process and help them grow their community along the way.
